(LK time)The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is advancing plans to launch the Maha Oya Pumped Storage Hydropower Project, Sri Lanka’s pioneering “Water Battery.”
This groundbreaking 600 MW initiative aims to store surplus renewable energy from solar and wind, ensuring power stability and supporting Sri Lanka’s target of sourcing 70% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.
Situated in Aranayake and Nawalapitiya, the project will incorporate two reservoirs linked by a 2.5 km tunnel, operating as a massive energy storage system. By cutting reliance on fossil fuels and curbing carbon emissions, the Maha Oya project will be instrumental in Sri Lanka’s shift toward sustainable energy.
The CEB is working to obtain long-term funding from global agencies to reduce the impact on electricity rates while ensuring affordability for citizens.
The Maha Oya project marks a significant leap toward energy independence, offering grid support for renewable energy integration, boosting economic development, generating employment, and enhancing environmental sustainability.
The CEB urges all stakeholders to back this initiative and contribute to Sri Lanka’s transition to a cleaner, stronger energy future, it emphasized in a statement.
