Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has lodged a writ petition with the Court of Appeal, requesting an order to halt his detention.
The petition, submitted via his legal counsel, has appealed for an interim ruling to suspend the arrest warrant issued against him by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
The Matara Magistrate’s Court had recently sanctioned a warrant for the apprehension of the ex-IGP regarding a firearm incident that occurred outside the W15 Hotel in the Pelena locality of Weligama, Matara, on December 31, 2023.
The case was reviewed by a two-member Appeals Court panel, including Acting President of the Court of Appeal Mohamed Lafar Tahir and Justice Sarath Dissanayake, today (10).
Following this, the judicial panel directed that the case be listed for additional proceedings on March 12, after notices are issued to the petition’s respondents.
