Ending Political Interference: Acting IGP’s Vision for Police Accountability.!

Speaking at a special media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday (17) under the theme “The Role of the Police with the New Government Programme,” Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya revealed that, according to a recent survey, 40% of police officers are stationed at police stations within their permanent residential areas.

He further stated that both the Ministry Secretary and he strongly believe that police officers should not be assigned to stations within their residential areas. Accordingly, he plans to implement transfers to address this issue in the future.

Acknowledging the longstanding issue of political interference within the police force, from the highest-ranking officers to the lowest, he expressed his commitment to ending this culture. He also emphasized the importance of evaluating officers based on their performance to ensure accountability and professionalism.

Deputy Minister of Transport Dr. Prasanna Gunasena recently revealed the details of a scam in which all the tickets for the Ella Odyssey train running to Ella were sold out in a very short period of 42 seconds and informed the police to initiate an investigation into the matter.

Through the investigation conducted in this regard, the Railway Department has been able to identify one of the main suspects involved in this train ticket scam.

The suspect in question is reported to be an officer at the Makumbura Railway Station.

This railway officer, who has started a private company in the name of a relative of his, has booked all the train tickets through a technological method.

It is learnt that the Rs 1200 train tickets were later sold to foreigners at a high price of Rs. 16,000 through the company he is affiliated with.

Action was taken to catch this fraud under the leadership of Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena and it is reported that the service of the officer in question has now been suspended.

Participating in a special media briefing held at the Government Information Department under the theme ‘The Role of the Police with the New Government Programme’, Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya stated that the number of people who die in traffic accidents per day has been reduced through the traffic operation launched by the police in conjunction with the Clean Sri Lanka programme.

The Acting IGP stated that maintaining road discipline is of utmost importance and that this is invisible terrorism.

Prior to the programme, nearly 9 people died in traffic accidents per day and that this number has now been reduced from 4 to 2, said Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya.

According to police statistics, between 10-15 people per day become permanently disabled due to traffic accidents, which is more than the number of people who were disabled per day during the war, he added.

The Acting IGP also recalled that for the first time in history, no traffic accidents were reported on Christmas Day, December 25th, which was a special occasion.

The Police Media Division says that a new telephone number has been introduced to inform about fraud, bribery and misconduct committed by police officers.

Accordingly, the public has been given the opportunity to submit such complaints through the telephone number 1997.

The Police Media Division further says that this telephone line for providing information has been operated 24 hours a day.

Sri Lanka Slashes Electricity Rates: Up to 31% Reduction for Key Sectors.!

Electricity rates have been reduced by 20% with effect from today (17).

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has announced this while publishing its final report on the revision of electricity rates.

The unit rate for the household category between 0-30 has been reduced from Rs. 6 to Rs. 4 and the unit rate for the 31-60 category has been reduced from Rs. 9 to Rs. 6.

According to this electricity rate revision, which will be effective from midnight today (17), electricity rates for the household sector will be reduced by 20%, while electricity rates for religious places of worship and charitable institutions will be reduced by 21%.

Electricity rates for hotels have been reduced by 31%, for the industrial category by 30% and for the public utility category by 12%.

Steps have also been taken to reduce fees for government institutions by 11% and for street lamps by 11%.

A Pakistani court today (17) sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 14 years in prison.

The decision was made when a land corruption case, considered the most serious charge against Imran Khan, was taken up today.

He has been in prison since August 2023 for several charges, including the financial collapse the country faced during his time as Pakistan’s Prime Minister.

Issuing a statement, the Parliamentary Communications Department said that three parliamentary employees who were found guilty of sexually harassing female parliamentary employees have been dismissed from service.

The statement further states that these three employees were found guilty after several stages of investigations.

Following these investigations, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne has approved the dismissal of the three employees on the recommendations of the Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.

Yesterday (16), R. Duminda Silva was admitted to a general cell in the Welikada Prison as per medical recommendations, and the relevant information and photographs of the ward have been released to the media as well.

Prison Commissioner (media spokesperson) Gamini B. Dissanayake says that a certain group has been releasing false news on social media recently, claiming that special facilities have been provided to R. Duminda Silva, who was receiving treatment as an inpatient at the Welikada Prison Hospital, in a manner that is defaming the Prisons Department.

The prison media spokesperson states that after presenting every inmate who falls ill in the prison to the prison doctor, a decision is made as to whether or not to refer the inmate to the prison hospital for inpatient treatment, and that the patient is referred to a government hospital for further treatment based on the doctor’s recommendations.

The media spokesperson further stated that although media releases have been issued regarding this prisoner on various occasions, instances of false propaganda being made to mislead the public for the personal purposes of certain individuals are observed.

However, the prisoner in question has now completed his inpatient treatment at the prison hospital and has been admitted to a general ward of the Welikada Prison.

Southern Expressway Accident: 30 Foreigners Injured, Driver Dead.!

A horrific accident occurred this morning (17) when a bus carrying foreign tourists collided with the back of a cement lorry traveling in the same direction near the 138th pillar on the Southern Expressway towards Tangalle.

The bus driver, who was seriously injured in the accident, died on the way to the hospital, while the foreigners who were traveling in the bus were also injured and admitted to the Tangalle Base Hospital.

It is said that about 30 foreign nationals were traveling in the bus at the time of the accident, and the cause of the accident has not been identified yet.

The bus has been completely destroyed in the accident.
