(LK time)The Sri Lankan government has announced the introduction of a state-of-the-art and comfortable fleet of high-tech buses as part of the 2025 budget proposal. The announcement was made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and comfort of public transport services within Colombo city.
As an initial move, the government will roll out 100 air-suspension, low-floor buses along three major road corridors in Colombo.
To support this initiative, the government has allocated Rs. 3,000 million for the purchase of these 100 low-floor buses.
In addition to the government’s efforts, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) will contribute to the modernization plan by adding 200 low-bed passenger buses to its fleet, financed through its own resources.
This combined effort is expected to substantially improve the public transportation infrastructure in Colombo.
The new buses will be managed under newly formed companies known as Metro Bus Companies (MBC).
These companies will operate on a fully digitized platform, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
