Government to Launch Eco-Friendly Products with a Local Twist

Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, has announced that the government will introduce a series of environmentally friendly products rooted in green energy principles within the next two years. These products will aim to preserve the nation’s unique identity while supporting sustainable development.

Handunnetti made this statement during a recent visit to the VEGA Innovations facility in Maradana, where he had the opportunity to observe groundbreaking technologies. Among the innovations were the VEGA electric car, which is proudly recognized as the world’s third-fastest electric vehicle, the fully local electric three-wheeler, and other cutting-edge AI-powered products.

The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for sustainable technologies, underlining that the current administration is ready to implement necessary policy changes to remove obstacles hindering the promotion of green products, both locally and internationally.

During the visit, VEGA Innovations’ CEO, Dr. Harsha Subasinghe, shared his vision for the future of artificial intelligence (AI). He projected that by 2030, the AI industry could grow to a remarkable $1.5 trillion, with Sri Lanka having the potential to capture at least 1% of this market, which translates to a potential $150 billion opportunity.

Dr. Subasinghe also highlighted the rapid global growth in demand for electric three-wheelers, a market currently valued at $30 billion. He suggested that Sri Lanka could tap into 10% to 15% of this sector, which would significantly boost the local economy.

Sri Lanka’s Tourism Booms with $3.17 Billion Revenue in 2024

Sri Lanka has made remarkable strides in global tourism, recording an impressive USD 3.17 billion in revenue for 2024, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). This marks a 53.2% increase from the USD 2.07 billion earned in 2023, solidifying the island’s status as a top global destination.

The surge in revenue is backed by a significant rise in international arrivals, with over two million tourists visiting the country—an increase of 38.1% compared to the previous year. This growth has been largely driven by targeted international marketing campaigns, renewed efforts to spotlight Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage and natural beauty, along with traveller-friendly policies such as improved connectivity and streamlined visa procedures.

Looking ahead to 2025, Sri Lanka has set ambitious goals, targeting three million tourist arrivals and aiming for USD 5 billion in tourism revenue. To achieve these milestones, the government is prioritising tourism infrastructure upgrades, promoting eco-conscious travel experiences, and encouraging community-based tourism ventures. By blending cultural authenticity with sustainability, the country aims to offer unique and transformative travel experiences.

Beyond the impressive figures, the tourism boom is directly benefiting local communities. From rural artisans to boutique hotel owners, many are reaping the rewards, with thousands of jobs created across the island. This positive trend is particularly empowering women and youth, further cementing tourism’s role in inclusive economic development.

With its unmatched diversity, ranging from golden beaches and ancient temples to thrilling safaris and vibrant cultural festivals, Sri Lanka continues to captivate global travellers. By staying committed to sustainable tourism practices and innovative strategies, the island nation is positioning itself as a leading global travel destination for 2025 and beyond.

Four New Supreme Court Justices Sworn In Before President

Four newly appointed Supreme Court Justices officially took their oaths of office today (12) before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat.

The justices elevated from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court are R.M.S. Rajakaruna, Menaka Wijesundara, Sampath B. Abeykoon, and M.S.K.B. Wijeratne. The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by President Dissanayake, as confirmed by the President’s Media Division (PMD).

Also present at the event was the Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

Vehicle Import Taxes in Sri Lanka Could Soar Up to 600%

The Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association has expressed concerns over a significant potential increase in vehicle import taxes, which already hover around 300%. The association warns that taxes could climb as high as 400%, 500%, or even 600% for certain vehicles, mainly due to multiple layers of taxation.

Association president Prasad Manage explained, “There is a special import tax based on the vehicle’s value. Additionally, there’s a luxury tax, and all three are added to the CIF value. On top of that, an 18% VAT is applied. This results in four types of taxes determining the final cost of a vehicle.”

Projected Tax Hikes on Popular Vehicles

The association highlighted how these increased taxes could affect vehicle prices:

Suzuki Wagon R: Taxes may rise from Rs. 1.6 million to over Rs. 1.8 million.
Toyota Vitz: Current taxes around Rs. 2 million could increase to approximately Rs. 2.4 million.
Toyota Aqua, Corolla, and Axio: Previously taxed between Rs. 5.7 million and Rs. 6.6 million, the taxes could now surpass Rs. 6.6 million.

While vehicle import costs are expected to surge, the prices of vehicles already in the local market are anticipated to see only minimal increases.

Advice for Buyers Amid Tax Changes

Despite the rising import taxes, Mr. Manage urged the public not to panic. He advised potential buyers to wait for new vehicle shipments to arrive in Sri Lanka, as supply levels may stabilise the market.

Policy Shifts Behind the Tax Changes

Sri Lanka has maintained strict restrictions on vehicle imports since 2020 due to the economic crisis. However, with the implementation of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the recovery of foreign reserves, there has been renewed optimism about easing import restrictions.

In September 2024, the Cabinet approved a phased resumption of motor vehicle imports under 304 Harmonized System (HS) Codes, effective from February 2025. However, a recent gazette notification introduced new excise duty amendments, further increasing taxes on both fuel-powered and electric vehicles based on cylinder capacity and vehicle age.

Mill Owners Must Register with Paddy Marketing Board: Deputy Minister

Deputy Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, R.M. Jayawardena, stated that all mill owners and storekeepers purchasing paddy during the ‘Maha season’ must register with the government’s Paddy Marketing Board.

He explained that the registration will establish a data system to monitor rice quantities received and ensure rice stocks cannot be concealed.

Jayawardena highlighted that the government is implementing the paddy purchasing programme to maintain a steady rice supply without shortages.

He further noted that the government will announce a fixed price for both paddy and rice simultaneously as part of this initiative.

සෞඛ්‍ය හා ජනමාධ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය වෛද්‍ය නලින්ද ජයතිස්ස විශේෂ නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කරමින් සදහන් කළේ, මෙරට මාධ්‍යවේදීන් විවිධ වකවානුවල, විවිධ පාලන තන්ත්‍රයන්ගේ පළිගැනිමට හා තර්ජනයට හා හිංසනයට ලක් වූ කළු අතීතය වැනි තත්ත්වයක් නැවත මේ රට තුළ නිර්මාණය වීමට කිසිසේත් ඉඩ නොතබන බවයි.

පසුගිය කාලයේ පුරා පැවති ආණ්ඩු කිහිපයක් තුළ පීඩාවට පත් සියළු මාධ්‍යවේදීන් වෙනුවෙන් යුක්ති හා සාධාරණය ඉටු කිරීමටත් එකී අකටයුතුකම් සිදු කළ චූදිතයින් නීතිය ඉදිරියට ගෙන ඒමට පසුබට නොවන බවත් ආණ්ඩුවේ මාධ්‍ය සම්බන්ධ ප්‍රතිපත්තිය පිළිබඳ ඇතැමුන් ඉදිරිපත් කරන විවේචනාත්මක කරුණු බලය ගිළිහුණු අයගේ උමතු ප්‍රකාශ බවද අමාත්‍ය වෛද්‍ය නලින්ද ජයතිස්ස සදහන් කරයි.

මාධ්‍ය ආයතනවලට තර්ජනය කිරීම්, සීල් තැබීම්, මාධ්‍යවේදීන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන ත්‍රස්ත විමර්ශන ඒකකයේ රඳවා තබා ගැනීම්, මාධ්‍ය ආයතනවලට ගිනි තැබීම් මෙන්ම බෝම්ම ගැසීම් රාජපක්ෂ අවිචාර පාලන සමයේ සුලබ සිදුවිම් බවත් පසුගිය 2006 සිට 2015 ජනවාරි දක්වා මාධ්‍යවේදීන් 13ක් ඝාතනය වූ බවද අමාත්‍යවරයා සදහන් කරයි.

මාධ්‍යවේදීන් කිහිප දෙනෙකු අතුරුදන්විමත් 87 දෙනෙකු පහරකෑමට ලක්වීමත් පුද්ගලික මාධ්‍ය ආයතන හතරකට අවස්ථා පහකදී පහර දීමත් ඒ පිළිබඳව සාක්ෂි විනාශ කිරීමත්, පීඩාවට පත් සියළු දෙනාට යුක්තිය හා සාධාරණය ඉටු කිරිමටත් එම අකටයුතුකම් කළ චූදතයින් නීතිය ඉදිරියට ගෙන ඒමට සියළු ක්‍රියාමාර්ග ගැනීමට පසුබට නොවන බවද අමාත්‍යවරයා අවධාරණය කරයි.

ගෝඨා බෑ කීවාට අනුර හා කියයි.!

පසුගිය 2020 වසරේදී හිටපු ජනාධිපති ගෝඨාභය රාජපක්ෂ රජය විසින් අහෝසි කළ විශ්‍රාම වැටුප් වැඩි කිරීමේ ක්‍රියාවලිය නැවත බලාත්මක කිරීමට අනුර දිසානායක මහතා ප්‍රමුඛ මාලිමා රජය විසින් තීරණය කර ඇති බව වාර්ථා වේ.

2016 ජනවාරි පළමු වැනිදා සිට 2019 දෙසැම්බර් 31 දක්වා කාල සීමාව තුළ විශ්‍රාම ගිය රාජ්‍ය සේවකයින් සඳහා එම විශ්‍රාම වැටුප් වැඩි කිරීම ලබා දීමට කටයුතු කරනා බව කම්කරු නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍ය මහින්ද ජයසිංහ මහතා සඳහන් කළේය.

අමාත්‍යවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසූවේ එළැඹෙන අයවැය මගින් ඊට අදාළ ප්‍රතිපාදන වෙන් කර ඇති බවයි.

දුම දැම්මොත් අසාදුයි.. දින 14න් යකඩ බරට.!

මෝටර් රථ දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ නිලධාරියෙක් පුවත්පත් සාකච්ඡාවකට එක්වෙමින් පවසා සිටියේ විස දුමාරය පිට කරමින් ධාවනය කෙරෙන සියලු වාහන අසාදු ලේඛනගත (Black List) කිරීම සඳහා ඉදිරියේදී කටයුතු කරන බවයි.

විස දුම පිට කරන වාහන හඳුනා ගැනීම සඳහා මෝටර් රථ දෙපාර්තමේන්තු නිලධාරීන් සහ පොලිසිය ඒකාබද්ධව දිවයින පුරා අඛණ්ඩ මෙහෙයුම් ක්‍රියාත්මක කරමින් වැඩපිළිවෙළක් මේ වන විටත් ආරම්භකොට ඇති බවත් එහිදී හඳුනාගන්නා එවැනි වාහන පිළිසකර කරගැනීම සඳහා ලබා දෙන දින 14ක සහන කාලයකින් පසුව අවසන් සිහි කැඳවීමක් නිකුත් කර මෙම ක්‍රියාමාර්ගය ගැනෙන බවත් එම නිලධාරියා අවධාරණය කළේය.

මෙසේ අසාදු ලේඛනගත කිරීමෙන් පසුව එම වාහන සඳහා රක්ෂණ හෝ ආදායම් බලපත්‍ර නිකුත් කරනු නොලැබේ.

පාකිස්තාන රජය පාර්ශවයෙන් ෙරට පිහිටි ඓතිහාසික බෞද්ධ නටබුන් නඩත්තුව සඳහා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බෞද්ධ නියෝජිතයන්ට ලබා දීමට යෝජනා වී ඇතැයි වාර්තා වේ.

විදේශ කටයුතු අමාත්‍යාංශයේ ආරංචි මාර්ග පවසන්නේ ඒ අනුව, ලාහෝර්, තක්ෂිලා සහ පේෂාවර් යනාදී ප්‍රදේශවල පිහිටි මෙම නටබුන් සහිත තැන් සුරක්ෂා කිරීමේ වගකීම ශ්‍රී ලංකා පාර්ශ්වකරුවන් වෙත ලැබෙනු ඇතැයි පැවසේ.

පසුගියදා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පාකිස්තාන මහ කොමසාරිස් මේජර් ජෙනරාල් ෆහීම් උල් අසීස් මහතා විදේශ කටයුතු ඇමති විජිත හේරත් මහතා හමු වූ අවස්ථාවේද මේ සම්බන්ධයෙන් සාකච්ඡාවට ලක්ව තිබේ.

දැනට ඉන්දියාවේ ජෛන ආගමිකයන්ට මෙම අවස්ථාව ලබාදී ඇතැයි ද ඒ අනුව පාකිස්තානයේ පිහිටි ජෛන ආගමික නටබුන් සුරක්ෂා කිරීමේ මිත්‍රශීලි භූමිකාවක් ජෛන ආගමික නියෝජිතයන් විසින් දරනු ලබන අතර මෙම පූර්වාදර්ශය අනුව යමින් ලංකාවේ බෞද්ධාගමිකයන්ට ද එම අවස්ථාව ලබාදීමට හැකි බව පාකිස්තාන මහ කොමසාරිස් මේජර් ජෙනරාල් ෆහීම් උල් අසීස් මහතා විජිත හේරත් අමාත්‍යවරයාට පවසා ඇත.

වර්තමානයේ ඉස්ලාම් ආගමික රටක් ලෙස හැඳින්වුවද ඉපැරැණි බෞද්ධ ශිෂ්ටාචාරයකට උරුමකම් කියන පාකිස්තානය අතීතයේ ගාන්ධාර දේශය ලෙසින් හැඳින්විය.
