Public Distrust in Government Falls to 16%.!

The government’s popularity rating surged significantly after the election, from 24% in July 2024 to 62% in February 2025, when the latest round of the Gallup-style ‘Mood of the Nation’ survey was conducted by Verité Analytics.

For the first time since the economic downturn, a majority of citizens (55%) believe that economic conditions in Sri Lanka are “improving steadily.” However, 47% still think that the economy, overall, is in a “bad state.” This is a drop from the 71% who held that view in July 2024.

From July 2024 to February 2025, the percentage of people who criticized the government declined from 60% to 16% (a 44-point decrease), and the percentage of those who feel the economy is deteriorating fell from 65% to 14% (a 51-point reduction).

Government Rating | Approval 62% | Disapproval 16%

In response to the question, “Do you approve or disapprove of how the current administration is performing?” 62% responded with “approve,” more than doubling the previous 24%. Only 16% said they “disapprove,” a stark contrast to the previous 60%.

Economic Outlook | “Improving Steadily” 55% | “Getting Worse” 14%

When asked, “Do you think economic conditions in the country are improving or worsening?”, 55% stated “improving steadily,” compared to 30% in July 2024. Only 14% said “getting worse,” a steep decline from 65% earlier.

State of the Economy | “Strong” or “Excellent” 35% | “Weak” 47%

When asked to describe the present economic climate as “excellent,” “strong,” or “weak,” 35% rated it as either “strong” or “excellent,” rising from 28% in July 2024. Meanwhile, 47% called it “weak,” marking a 24-point drop from the previous 71%.

Survey Methodology

This regularly conducted survey is part of the Syndicated Surveys project by Verité Research. The survey partner was Vanguard Surveys (Pvt) Ltd. This initiative also allows external organizations to assess public opinion in Sri Lanka.

The latest study was based on a nationally representative multi-stage randomized sample of 1,050 Sri Lankan adults from distinct households, conducted between 31 January and 5 February 2025. The survey was designed with a ±3.0% error margin at a 95% confidence level, though implementation-related factors can influence accuracy.
