(LK time)Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced in Parliament today (10) that the administration plans to introduce a fresh examination to substitute the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination by 2028, aiming to lessen emotional strain on children.
She mentioned that a specialist panel will be established next year to assess and overhaul the existing scholarship exam system. The team will concentrate on alleviating excessive burden placed on young learners while maintaining the test as a just chance for educational progress.
Addressing the main reason behind the fierce rivalry linked to the scholarship exam, the Prime Minister noted that variations in school standards compel students to pursue entry into esteemed institutions. She stressed that the administration’s ultimate objective is to reduce these differences and develop a more balanced education framework.
“The Grade 5 Scholarship Exam exists due to the imbalances among schools. It grants gifted students an opportunity to transfer to an institution with superior amenities. While we cannot erase these differences instantly, we are striving to progressively narrow the divide between well-equipped and disadvantaged schools. Until then, the scholarship exam will persist, but we are dedicated to lessening the psychological strain it causes on students,” she stated.
