Is the Attorney General’s Department Facing Abolition?

While the government is busy establishing the Independent Prosecutor’s Office, there are divided opinions in society, with some speculating that the Attorney General’s Department may be abolished in return.

The government says this new institution should be established to provide more efficient services in the justice process than the Attorney General’s Department.

Different parties in the socoety have, however, formed opinions on the matter.

Journalists present at the press conference held today (11) to announce the decisions taken by the cabinet asked Minister Nalinda Jayatissa whether the government would take a stand on it.

He further said that the establishment of the Independent Prosecutor’s Office does not abolish the Attorney General or the Attorney General’s Department.

The Minister further stated that the representation of the new Independent Prosecutor’s Office would fall under the responsibility of the Attorney General Department and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.

We are happy to invite you.
