(LK time)A Police Sergeant assigned to the Hatton Police Station has been taken into custody by officers from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for accepting a Rs. 15,000 bribe, allegedly assuring the dismissal of a legal case against a couple.
The arrest occurred on Tuesday (11) around 11.00 a.m. within the Hatton Magistrate’s Court premises, following a complaint lodged by a resident from the Angoda region.
Reports indicate that the Police Sergeant had demanded a bribe in return for initiating steps to secure the release of the complainant and his spouse from an ongoing case at the Hatton Magistrate’s Court and ensuring its closure.
Initially, the officer had requested Rs. 20,000 but later lowered the demand to Rs. 15,000. He was apprehended while receiving this amount as a bribe.
The suspect was subsequently presented before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court and has been ordered to remain in remand custody until March 18.
