(LK time)A discussion between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and top officials from the Excise Department took place today (11) at the Presidential Secretariat.
The conversation centred on tackling ongoing issues within the Excise Department and meeting this year’s financial objectives, the President’s Media Division (PMD) stated.
One major aspect of the discussion was aligning the department’s processes with the Inland Revenue Department to improve effectiveness and transparency in tax administration.
Focus was given to the streamlined and productive supervision of alcohol and other legally permitted substances to boost national economic progress.
This involves boosting government earnings through proper oversight of the alcohol and tobacco industries, supporting legitimate revenue growth, ensuring adherence to laws and policies, running impactful awareness campaigns against illicit alcohol, dangerous drugs, and psychoactive substances, minimising health hazards from uncontrolled alcohol usage, and strengthening public security, according to the PMD.
Talks were also held regarding revenue enhancement and safeguarding through a well-structured decision-making and operational strategy.
The importance of designing a workforce and technological advancement strategy to improve the Excise Department’s overall efficiency was highlighted, the PMD further noted.
The meeting was attended by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Mahinda Siriwardana, Commissioner General of Excise Udaya Kumara Perera, and several senior Excise Department officials.
