Public Sector Pay Hike: Minimum Basic Wage Upped by Rs. 15,750.!

The government has suggested a modification to the public sector salary structure as part of the 2025 Budget, enhancing the minimum salaries and simplifying the allowances.

Introducing the 2025 budget proposals, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the minimum base pay in the public sector would be boosted by Rs. 15,750, increasing it from Rs. 24,250 to Rs. 40,000.

This revision will support employees across multiple sectors, including judicial services, state corporations, statutory boards, university personnel, and tri-service officials.

Additionally, the current temporary interim allowance and special allowance will be merged into the base salary, along with a net addition of Rs. 8,250 to the minimum wage.

Under this reform, the minimum increment of Rs. 250 will increase to Rs. 450, while the increment of Rs. 500 will rise to Rs. 900.

The total projected cost for implementing this pay adjustment is Rs. 325 billion, with an initial allocation of Rs. 110 billion in 2025.

The salary increase will be rolled out in phases, starting with a Rs. 5,000 net wage boost and 30% of the adjustment in April 2025. The remaining 70% will be paid in equal portions in January 2026 and 2027, the President emphasized.

Meanwhile, President Dissanayake also unveiled plans to tackle critical staff shortages in the public sector by hiring 30,000 new workers for vital roles. To support this recruitment, Rs. 10 billion has been allocated in the 2025 Budget.
