(LK time)The ongoing arid weather conditions across the island have resulted in interruptions in the water supply in multiple parts of the region.
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) stated that water supply issues have impacted sections of Colombo, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Matara, and Kandy.
It has been reported that water levels in reservoirs and other sources are declining rapidly due to the persistent dry climate conditions.
With rising water usage and a restricted supply, the NWSDB has urged the public to use water wisely and reduce usage for non-essential tasks such as washing vehicles and gardening.
Additionally, the NWSDB stated that it is currently distributing water via tankers to certain households in the most impacted areas.
Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has reported a rise in electricity production costs due to the prevailing drought-like weather conditions.
CEB Media Spokesperson Dhammika Wimalaratne stated that, as a result, more thermal-based and oil-powered plants have been brought into operation.
He further noted that measures have been taken to run the Norochcholai Power Plant at its peak output of 900 megawatts, while the Kelanitissa ‘Naphtha’ Power Station and the Sapugaskanda Power Station have also been activated.
According to the spokesman, hydroelectric power plants currently generate 20% of the total electricity supply during the day and 40% at nighttime.
He also noted that solar-based plants provide an additional boost for electricity generation during the daytime.
